The Danish Government wants to strengthen the Danish national defence industry
On August 13th, the Danish Government presented a new National Defence Industrial Strategy for industrial policies within the area of defence. Its purpose is to prepare Denmark against future threats and create jobs throughout Denmark.
Presentation of the new National Defence Industrial Strategy.
With this strategy, the Danish Government defines a framework for an entirely new and strengthened approach toward its cooperation with the defence industry concerning future defence and security policy solutions. The strategy simultaneously has a focus on new areas of technological priorities, where development must be enhanced. This includes space technologies, energy solutions, artificial intelligence and cyber technologies.
In order to take advantage of the best solutions from the civilian world, the Danish Government is expanding its cooperation with civilian high-tech companies, that have not traditionally worked within the defence industry sphere. This includes companies within the energy sector and drone sector, as threats of the future are not only military.
With the new strategy, the Danish government seeks to strengthen the cooperation with research institutions within areas such as the Arctic, space and development of new green energy solutions that can be used within the area of defence.
The Danish defence attachés and export advisors based at the Danish embassies are given a stronger mandate and better tools to support Danish defence industry‘s access to foreign markets.
The new National Defence Industrial Strategy was created in collaboration with companies and interest groups in order to ensure its support of the industry’s actual needs and wants.
Minister of Defence Trine Bramsen:
“A strong Danish defence industry is vital for Danish security. During the past years, we have seen a rapid development of threats impacting Danish security, which require new approaches in the way we develop and make acquisitions. There is no longer the same time available for completing acquisitions and in addition, our development and purchases demand increased requirements in relation to the suppliers’ security. Danish defence companies are strong when it comes to understanding the threats, develop and delivery important capacities. That is why we must be far better at supporting them through collaboration within the defence area. That is the purpose of this strategy. I want to thank the companies for the many valuable inputs they have provided during the development of the new strategy. They are instrumental in ensuring that we now have a strategy, which is usable and not just nice declarations of intent”
Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Simon Kollerup:
“In Denmark, we have a strong defence industry that produces high-tech material supporting our defence and allies across the world, every day. At the same time, Danish companies’ revenue collectively reaches several billion DKK annually. They showcase Danish quality, sustainability and innovation globally. That is why it makes sense to have a strategy that develops the industry, so that Danish workplaces are able to contribute to a more secure world in the future as well as today.”
Minister for Foreign Affairs Jeppe Kofod:
“Our defence industry is important to our security and our unity with allies and partners. With the strategy we will work for a strong and sustainable defence industry that strengthens our response to future threats. At the same time, we will create jobs, export and attract foreign direct investments. Our embassies and defence attaches will play an important role”.
