Dansk-ledet hovedkvarter i Letland erklæret fuldt operativt
Fg. forsvarsminister Troels Lund Poulsen har sammen med Letlands forsvarsminister, Ināra Mūrniece, i dag ved en ceremoni i Letland erklæret det dansk-ledede NATO-hovedkvarter Multinational Division North fuldt operativt.

Med markeringen bliver det dansk-ledede divisionshovedkvarter Multinational Division North (MND-N) erklæret fuldt operativt og kan indgå fuldt ud i NATO’s styrkestruktur. Hovedkvarteret vil bidrage til afskrækkelsen af Rusland og til Alliancens forsvar i Østersøregionen.
"Danmark og Letland er tætte partnere og allierede. Vores nære relation går adskillige årtier tilbage, og som det fremgår af både regeringsgrundlaget og rammeaftalen for et nyt forsvarsforlig, har Danmark et særligt medansvar for de baltiske landes sikkerhed. Det ansvar har vi tænkt os at leve op til. Hovedkvarteret i Letland er et væsentligt bidrag, og med dagens erklæring understreger vi Danmarks engagement i de baltiske lande," siger fungerende forsvarsminister Troels Lund Poulsen.
Hovedkvarterets rolle er at koordinere de landmilitære aktiviteter i området, herunder NATO’s fremskudte tilstedeværelse (enhanced Forward Presence). Desuden bidrager hovedkvarteret til træning og forsvarsplanlægning. Hovedkvarteret har været under opbygning siden 2018 og indgår i NATO’s styrkestruktur. Danmark bidrager med cirka halvdelen af personellet i hovedkvarterets stab.
Dansk bataljon på vej til Letland i 2024
Efter Ruslands invasion af Ukraine i 2022 udsendte Forsvaret en kampbataljon til Letland. Bataljonens Hold 2 blev hjemtaget i maj 2023. Regeringen besluttede i maj, at Danmark fra medio 2024 igen vil tilbyde en bataljon til forsvaret af de baltiske lande. Bataljonen vil være deployeret til Letland 4-6 måneder om året og vil resten af tiden være på beredskab i Danmark.
"Det er både i de baltiske landes og Danmarks interesse, at vi igen kan udsende danske soldater til basen i Adazi, Letland. Med aftalen om at sende en dansk bataljon på op til 1.200 personer bidrager vi aktivt og markant til NATO’s afskrækkelse og forsvar. Det er et vigtigt signal at sende forud for NATO-topmødet i Vilnius," siger fungerende forsvarsminister Troels Lund Poulsen.
I Letland besøger Troels Lund Poulsen sammen med forsvarschef Flemming Lentfer desuden den danske tilsynsstyrke, der aktuelt er udsendt til Camp Valdemar ved Adazi Military Base nær Riga. Tilsynsstyrkens opgave er at vedligeholde lejren, der igen fra medio 2024 skal huse danske soldater.

JOINT DECLARATION BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE OF
THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA AND THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE OF
DENMARK CONCERNING DEVELOPMENT OF MULTINATIONAL
DIVISION NORTH AND DEEPENING OF BILATERAL COOPERATION
We, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia and the Minister of Defence of Denmark, recognize our common interest in international peace and security and share our commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty.
Latvia and Denmark are close allies with long history of friendship and close cooperation. As allies, we share the same democratic values, security interests and threat perception. Our countries have established a strong and enduring relationship and partnership in both bilateral and multilateral
fora.
At the 2018 NATO Summit in Brussels, the Ministers of Defence of Denmark, Latvia and Estonia signed a joint declaration of intent to establish a new divisional command to increase NATO presence in the Baltic region. In March 2023, HQ MND-N successfully completed Combat Readiness Evaluation. With the division command having reached full operational capability, Denmark and Latvia will continue to work with NATO to ensure operation of the HQ and further develop MND-N with a view to allocated allied forces. The aim of these efforts is to ensure the necessary warfighting capacities of MND-N in time of crisis and conflict. To achieve this goal, Latvia and Denmark intend to develop a plan within the established framework of the two countries concerning the development of MND-N. The work will start in continuation of the approved
regional plans and NATO force sourcing with the aim to ensure allocation of the combat-ready allied forces, as decided by NATO.
Latvia and Denmark will together with NATO allies establish and implement arrangements associated with the development of MND-N. In order to facilitate the development of the division, both countries will work jointly to welcome other Allied nations to join as Framework Nations or Participating Nations of HQ MND-N and contribute with necessary forces and capabilities.
Apart from its contribution to development of MND-N, Denmark, in rotation with allies, will offer a battalion-sized contingent to the Canadian-led NATO enhanced Forward presence in Latvia for a duration of 4-6 months a year starting from mid-2024. Additionally, Denmark will expand the facilities of Camp Valdemārs at the Ādaži Military Base to accommodate up to 1,200 troops.
Latvia will ensure the necessary Host Nation Support for the augmented presence of Allied forces on its soil. For this purpose, Latvia will develop a new military base and a training range Selonia in the eastern part of the country.
